The Department of Agriculture (DA) is continuously conducting surveillance in Bataan for possible flu or avian influenza in several towns. Dr. Alberto Venturina, chief of provincial veterinary office, said a surveillance team had been fielded within 7- kilometer radius to get blood samples and conduct oropharyngeal swab test on all pouting species in Hermosa, Samal, Orani and Dinalupihan town “Once mag-negative ang results sa bird flu virus, made-declare na ang Bataan na bird flu free,” Venturina said. Last March, avian flu virus was detected in two barangays of Hermosa wherein surveillance operation had been completed. About three weeks earlier, avian influenza was detected in Sto. Tomas, Pampanga where 100,000 chickens infected with virus were culled as a mitigating measure against the disease. The DA Regional Office in Central Luzon issued an order for stricter control and containment against bird flu in Sto. Tomas town.
